Honours Trip to Winton Gallery

Year 7 and 8 Honours students had the opportunity to visit the Winton Gallery at the Science Museum and introduced to the powerful stories about the work of mathematicians in the broadest sense, from salespeople to sailors, aircraft engineers to bankers, and gamblers to garden designers.

These stories span 400 years of human ingenuity from the renaissance to the present day, with objects ranging from intriguing hand-held mathematical instruments to a 1929 experimental aircraft. The aim of the visit involved the students thinking about how they apply mathematics to solve problems and where this knowledge influences design and connects to every aspect of our lives.

The group also had time to visit two other exhibitions:

‘Engineer Your Future’ – students were presented with a series of interactive experiences based on key engineering skills used by real-life engineers.

‘Robots’ – the was a mind-bending array of humanoid imagery and robotic delights. From the dawn of mechanised human forms to cutting-edge technology fresh from the lab, ‘Robots’ reveals the astonishing 500-year quest to make machines human.

The trip was most enjoyable and well worth a visit by everyone.
